Residential Services

The Morrow County Board of MR/DD is currently unable to provide the required local funds for residential services. These services include the payment for vital services rendered by agency and independent providers in Morrow County to enable individuals to live and work in, as well as contribute to, their home communities.

Early Intervention (EI) Services

Early Intervention classroom and therapy services were suspended in June 2006. Early Intervention services, beginning at birth and continuing through age 2, have proven to be invaluable in the development of young children, often reducing or eliminating the need for life long services. Families must frequently travel out of Morrow County to professionals for services. As the miracle of medical advancements provides families with lifesaving measures for their infants, Early Intervention becomes essential to provide the necessary steps to full development.

Adult Services

Community and recreational services for adults were suspended over five years ago. These services provide support to adults seeking opportunities for community involvement, employment, job coaching, recreational therapy and activities, etc. By helping adults with mr/dd to become more involved in their communities, we help them increase their independence and self-sufficiency so that their lives can be more fulfilling.

Capital Needs

Funds have not been available for capital needs for several years. With aging buildings and deteriorating vehicles, substantial funds will be needed in the immediate future to provide the proper care and maintenance to ensure valuable services can continue.

Helping School Age

Collaboration with area schools is necessary to meet the year-round needs of Morrow County school age students. Many students are in need of vital services during the summer months. Gaps in services can cause greater setbacks and developmental delays for children with mr/dd than for typical students. These services may include service and support, therapies, family support/respite, and summertime day activities.

Now, what can you do to help?

The Starfish Story

Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up.

As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean. He came closer still and called out "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?"

The young man paused, looked up, and replied, "Throwing starfish into the ocean."
"I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" said the somewhat startled wise man. To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die."

Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, "But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!" At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, "I made a difference to that one!"
